Yangon Airways was established in October 1996, as a domestic airline in a joint venture between Myanma Airways, the state-owned national airline and Krong-Sombat Co, of Thailand. In October 1997, MHE-Mayflower Co acquired Krong-Sombat's shares in Yangon Airways and the remaining shares in 2005.
Yangon Airways operates new ATR 72-210s powered by Pratt & Whitney PW-127 engines.
The airline operates scheduled and charter services from Yangon to 15 prime commercial and tourist destinations in Myanmar.
As one of the main domestic airlines of the Union of Myanmar, Yangon Airways operates regular flights to Naypyitaw, Bagan, Mandalay, Heho (Inle Lake), Kyaing Tong, Tachileik, Myitkyina, Thandwe (Ngapali Beach), Sittway, Dawei, Myeik, Kawthaung, Lashio and charter flights to Bhamo, Putao, Kalay and others from its main hub at Yangon International Airport.
